The requirement of 100 completed service hours must be met by every senior prior to Prom, Grad Night, and Graduation...The deadline for meeting this important requirement is April 1. Seniors who do not submit verification of 100 completed hours by this date will be denied access to Prom and Grad Night, and will not be able to walk in Graduation. Jacky Yao, 17, of Claremont, Calif., a senior at Damien High School in La Verne, founded a community service outreach club at his school to encourage students to give more than the 25 hours of required service. Jacky partnered with dozens of nonprofit organizations to sponsor a variety of projects including fundraisers for breast cancer and leukemia foundations and toy drives for the needy. Help Damien High School stay green while raising funds for Christian Service by donating your recyclable plastic, aluminum, and glass bottles and containers. Collection is every 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. Drop off clean and trash-bagged recyclables at the Recycle Station located at the North end of the faculty parking lot on the Northwest corner of campus before school or directly after ONLY.

LA VERNE - Top-seeded Damien High School led from the opening tipoff and easily knocked off El Dorado, an at-large team from the Century League, 56-37 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 3AAA first-round playoff game Wednesday.

The Spartans (25-2) will face Citrus Valley, a 74-49 winner over Garden Grove Santiago, in a second-round game Friday at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined.

Keith Cavanaugh hit a 3-pointer with 1:05 gone in the game and the Spartans never looked back. They led 18-7 at the end of the first quarter.

"The first one's tough," Spartans coach Matt Dunn said. "I thought for the most part we played pretty well. It was a good solid win in the first round."

The Spartans had trouble pulling away until freshman Jeremy Hemsley came in midway through the first quarter. He had three blocked shots, two steals and seven points in the quarter. His block of a 3-point attempt sparked a 12-3 run and let the Golden Hawks know who was going to be in charge the rest of the night.

Hemsley led the Spartans with 16 points.

"It was a pretty open game," Dunn said. "He's pretty gifted in the open court. I thought he did a really nice job because he was really patient. He did a nice job getting into the paint and score when it was the right thing to do and when it was the right thing to do to pass it back out, he did a nice job there also."
