Official Statement from the SS.CC. regarding Fr. Travers
We join our voice to those of generations of alumni and families of DHS in recognizing and expressing sincere gratitude to Fr. Pat Travers for the extraordinary energy and dedication with which he gave of himself during his almost 50 years of service in a variety of ministries at the high school. We intend to lead the community in a formal expression of those sentiments at an appropriate time in the future, and at the same time establish in his name an endowment that would perpetuate his spirit of concern and love by continuing to impact the lives of numerous future Damien students for years to come.
Recently, the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts considered it appropriate and timely—at the imminent approach of his 75 th birthday—that Fr. Pat be allowed to take a respite from his lengthy labor of love to enjoy a much deserved and long overdue sabbatical. While encouraged to do so, Fr. Pat expressed a desire to forego engaging in any extended form of sabbatical for the time being, and instead would welcome becoming engaged in ministry at one of the regional parishes that are short on priestly ministry—something presently being considered by Fr. Pat, the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts, and the officials of a nearby diocese.
We are happy to announce that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has appointed Fr. Peadar Cronin as President of Damien High School, and will be joined on the Damien staff by other members of the Sacred Hearts Community who are honored and prepared to commit themselves anew to ministry at Damien High School in a collaborative effort with Mr. Sam Pearsall as Principal. Thus the spirit of Saint Damien and the continued presence of the Sacred Hearts Fathers as integral components of the great history and tradition of Damien High School will be maintained—all in the spirit expressed in the school motto—“Cor Unum et Anima Una.”—“One Heart and One Spirit.”
